Where to play?
I’m a big fan of Viking themed slots and I must say Play N’ Go’s next installment delivers the goods and I mean in a big kinda way. Viking Runecraft a Norse-themed 3D slots played on a grid of 7×7 (7 paylines and 7 reels).
It’s a cascading game that has the ability to pay out on consecutive spins and the perfect game for mobile slots players. The minimum bet per spin starts with 10 pence up to £100 making it an ideal slots for high rollers. Against the background of your screen you’ll see ice-capped mountains and a viking warrior.
The slots comes with a very interesting game mechanic that gives the player access to ‘Four Charge Destruction‘ features and a slew of wilds that really boost wins. Paying symbols that appear on the reels are Norse gods (Thor, Odin, Freya and Heimdall) and low value symbols like an axe, hammer, helm, necklace and runes. Viking Runecraft slots comes with a theoretical return to player percentage (RTP) of 95.3% while the top non-progressive jackpot is 10,000 coins.
The graphics and animations depicted throughout the slots are first class making it a visual delight.
Once you’ve decided on your budget stick to it because this is a high variance slots that will chew up your cash in no time. Since it’s pretty volatile it really has the potential for some big wins but be prepared for a couple of dry spins in between wins too. If you had a nice win, cash out 80% and play with the rest.
You’ll see a meter which is charged with every winning spin, it’s also responsible for unlocking the 4 Charge Destruction modes. The most lucrative one of the lot is the ‘Scorching Surtr, here 3 symbols are set alight burning the adjacent symbols as well.
The Ragnarök feature gives you 1 free spin with multiplier wins of up to 15x. This mode has 4 gods, as you clear the pattern of each god you will progress to the next level. Thor, the god of Thunder gives you up to 9 symbols while the god of Guarding offers you one wild on each row. It’s a slots with a cascading engine, it simply means that winning combinations are given when you hit 5 or more winning combinations in a cluster be it horizontally or vertically. The nice thing about the feature is, as long as you keep on winning new symbols keep on popping up.
The Charge of Destruction during the Ragnarök feature is transformed into the ‘End of the World Bonus’ meter. A win multiplier is awarded on condition you experience enough wins during the feature. Wins are awarded like this: 20 symbols award a 2x multiplier, 40 symbols a 3x multiplier, 60 symbols award 5x multipliers and 80 symbols award a staggering 15x multiplier wins.
Now, if you get no more wins in the Ragnarök feature, 1 of the Charge of Destruction features comes into play – the feature only ends when all Charge of Destruction features have played out once each.
Let’s circle back to the ‘Charge Meter’ again; it’s charged by every win, however, when it’s full it unlocks 1 of the 4 Charge of Destruction bonus modes. They are the following:
- Fury of Fenrir-Symbols with 4 diagonal lines are slashed where 2 lines are removed and turned into the same symbol.
- Judgement of Jörmungand–In an unbroken sequence symbols are destroyed and transformed into the same random symbol.
- Scorching of Surtr–During this feature 3 symbols are set ablaze causing the adjacent symbols to catch fire too. The net result is a core of symbols catch fire with new ones being formed offering you a decent cash prize.
- Lure of Loki-Here 2 symbols are randomly selected. One symbol is removed from the grid while the other symbol is turned into another symbol.
Once one of the 4 Charge of Destruction features is completed, you must fill up the ‘Charge Meter’ again to unlock one of the bonus features again.
The Viking Runecraft features 4 different Gods, in order to see these gods, the pattern of each god must be cleared first. A pattern can only be cleared once wins have been formed on the specified grid positions. The moment a pattern is cleared you’ll advance to the next level and you’ll meet another Norse god. If you experience a bunch of dry spins during the main game ”The Gift of the Gods” is initiated. It awards winning combinations like this:
- God of Thunder feature: 5 to 9symbols become randomly wild.
- God of Wisdom feature: 4 wilds transform into two pairs, a wild in each pair is vertically linked to the next wild.
- God of Beauty feature: Each wild is transformed into clusters of 4 different symbols within a 5×5 area. Until you have a win wilds are formed 4 at a time.
- God of Guarding feature – When one wild appears on each row 7 wilds are created.
The good news is that the buck does not stop here! Every winning symbol contributes towards the growth of the Runes of Valhalla Bonus mode. Up to 5 different Rune stone winning combinations can be formed. The feature is triggered when 1 Rune Stone symbol combination is collected. A new screen opens up with a wheel which you must spin, the more runes you collect here the better your chance of winning the bonus.
My first impression of Viking Runecraft is that it appeared a tad complicated but it’s not. The biggest wins occur during the God of Thunder and God of Guarding features thanks in part to the staggering amount of wilds added to each grid.
The game offers a decent sized jackpot of up to 5,000x your stake but wins don’t come easy, if they do payouts are generally very good.
