Where to play?
Net Entertainment released its first 25 payline, 5 reel video slot for 2017 titled Scruffy Duck. With an upbeat soundtrack, funky-looking duck symbols across the reels and 5 distinct free spins bonus features the game has a lot going for it.
The theme of the slots is all about an ugly duckling (expanding wild) that turns into the proverbial swan, boosting wins both during the free spins and main game. The biggest cash prize that can be won is a non-progressive jackpot win of 300,000 coins. The return to player (RTP) percentage of the game is 96.6% which is really good.
In addition to the free spins modes there is a ‘Double Feature’ where 2 free spins features can be combined which pays 1,200x your stake. Bets can be made from £$.050 per spin which is great for a low roller like myself, the max bet per spin is £$250 making the game suitable to high rollers.
Symbols on the reels are cards from J to A wrapped up in broken egg shells, 4 different looking ducks, the Free Spins logo, Colossal Wilds, random wild and then there is the double features. The visual side of the slots is marvelous. The highest paying symbol is the dude with the mobile phone, 5 of them at the maximum wager pays 400 coins. Scruffy Duck online slot is playable on desktop and mobile phones (Androids, iPhones, iPads and tablets) for real cash or in the free mode.
There’s a trunk load of customization options at your disposal. You can use the Auto Play (my favourite) to spin the reels for you, there’s also audio and graphic settings. If you intend on playing the game from you phone with normal data bundles, don’t! Due to the rich graphics of the slots it will go through your data in no time, if you have Wi-Fi make sure it’s tuned on.
The coin value is 0.01 up to 1.00 while the bet level is 1 to 10. It’s important that you get this right otherwise you might wager way more cash than you intend to. If the bet level is 10 and the coin value is 1.00 your average bet per spin will be £250. With a bankroll of £20, a coin value of 0.02 and a bet level of 1 my average bet per spin was £0.50.
Old Scruffy Duck himself is the wild symbol, it’s also an expanding wild that pops up both during the base game and free spins mode. It expands to cover an entire reel to complete a winning combination, that said it does not replace the scatters (Free Spins logos). As the scruffy duck expands it transforms into a swan, it looks pretty neat when it does. When the wilds appear during the free spins they expand to cover the reels boosting wins.
Free Spins And Scatters
The free spins feature is triggered by three or more Free Spins logos regardless of position on the reels plus there are 5 Free Spins features each with their own rewards. Once the free spins mode is activated 5 ducks dive into a pond, you must pick one. The free spins mode looks like this:
- The first free spins feature offers you 15 free spins with multiplier wins of 3x.
- The second one is the ‘Symbol Removal’ that gives you 12 free spins, lower value icons are removed from the reels.
- The third is the ‘Colossal Wild’ feature, 10 free spins are awarded with 2×2 or 3×3 Colossal Wilds that pitch on reels 2, 3 and 4. To form a winning line the Colossal Wild is displayed partially of fully and can split into 2 to 9 single wilds. The Colossal Wild only appears on the middle three reels here.
- Random wild is the fourth free spins mode. It awards 8 free spins with 2 to 5 random wilds that can appear on every single spin.
- The fifth free spins is the ‘Double’ feature, you’ll get 6 free spins where any 2 of the aforementioned free spins feature are randomly selected for you. You’ll win big when the 3×3 Colossal wild expands on the first and fifth reels during this feature.
Tips And Strategy
Scruffy Duck really shines during the free spins. The biggest win I had during the main game was when 2 expanding wilds in combination with 4 yellow ducks pitched, I won £6.88. I also had other smaller wins during the base game but nothing spectacular.
The free spins mode (3 Free Spins logos) is triggered around 35 to 40 spins at the lowest bet level (£0.50 per spin). So if your average stake per spin is £0.50×40=£20 this is the amount it will cost you more or less to trigger it. With a bankroll of £20 I had a fabulous stroke of luck when I triggered the free spins feature on my second spin! The free spins mode I picked was the 15 free spins with 3x multipliers and won 1,270 coins or £25.
It took me another 30 spins to triggered the ‘Colossal Wild’ free spins, I won £480 coins or £9.60. Low and behold I triggered the free spins on my next 25 spins. I picked another random duck and hit the ‘Colossal Wild’ which gave me 10 free spins-I had my biggest win here, 1,760 coins or £35.50. From here on end things just went south for me, hard as I tried I just couldn’t trigger another free spins (I triggered 3 in total) despite making another 120 spins which cost me £60. I should have cashed out after I triggered the third free spins mode instead I decided to press on. I could have walked away with a nice win but lost £20 odd pounds in the end.
NetEnt’s Scruffy Duck slots leans towards the medium variance range and offers a total cash prize of a 1,200x your stake. In conjunction with the Colossal Wild, the Multiplier and Double feature, wins can be as high as 400x your bet.
To me it’s a great slots since the free spins feature is triggered around 40 odds spins making it a potential cash cow. It looked like I was well on my way winning big but greed got the better of me. If you’re a low roller, the best bit of advice I can give you is to play the game for at least 200 spins with an average stake of £.050 per spin at three different casinos (https://casinowhizz.com/must-play-different-online-casinos/).
