Whats not so hot?
Gonzo’s Gold is a real money slot from NetEnt. When we heard about the release our expectations for it was high. The online slot has 5 reels, 5 rows and a Cluster Pays system. We know 2021 has been one of the weirdest years to date. Luckily this didn’t damper the creative juices of the best online slot studios.
As far as Gonzo’s Gold goes it’s not a direct sequel to the immensely popular Gonzo’s Quest. It does however draws some inspiration from that slot. The action takes place inside an Aztec temple and the graphical arrangement is incredible. We didn’t expect anything less from NetEnt.
As we peel back the layers of Gonzo’s Gold, NetEnt crowns it with a Free Spins Feature. It’s worthwhile to trigger the bonus because it offers 10 free spins with Expanding Symbols. Needless to say, the real money slots studio stays loyal to the original. There are a few glaring oversights though. For one there are no Avalanches.
Moreover, instead of a high variance slot, it’s of medium volatility. This means the jackpot of 5,000x your stake is smaller than the original. High rollers that play Gonzo’s Gold at the max bet of $200 can win as much as $1 million. Not entirely life-changing it’s still a hefty chunk of cash!
You’ll receive a winning spin when 3 or more high pay or 4+ low pay symbols pitch. The betting range runs from $0.10 to as much as $200, so high rollers can get their fixes. You can enjoy Gonzo’s Gold across European online casinos, even as a mobile slot!
The payback rate or RTP of Gonzo’s Gold is in the region of 96.11%. That’s the default value and it’s a tiny bit above average. No complaints there, for one.
Visually, there are two types of symbols to look forward to. The low-value symbols are the card suits from Tens to Aces. The high-value symbols are better, they are three different masks and Gonzo himself. For the best win and the jackpot, you need a full set of Gonzo symbols. That means 25 symbols on the reel grid. Smaller yet juicy wins are easier to get. The production values are high, though not top of the crop.
When 3, 4, or 5 gold Inca Temples appear on your screen. You’ll trigger the Free Spins Feature with 10 free spins. The only change is the payout you’ll get. Depending on the number of triggering scatters; you can win 2x, 20x, or 200x your bet.
Before the free spins start, you’ll get to pick from 9 options. Once you make your pick, the game shows your chosen Expanding Symbol. Whenever you get 2 adjacent expanding symbols, they expand to cover an entire row or reel.
This means a bigger payout potential and a chance to fill the board with matching symbols. Remember, the way to jackpot leads to a full screen of Gonzo symbols. You can re-trigger the free spins the same way you trigger them. This will net you more free spins, sadly there are no other treats.
We were excited to dive into a fresh slot with the famous Gonzo. The visuals captured our attention, but the game ultimately failed to be a gem. Guess the hype was too much for some including us. The jackpot of 5,000x is by no means small. The lack of Avalanches dampens play to a large degree.
What made Gonzo’s Quest so fresh was the myriad of bonus rounds. There’s only one here and that’s the free spins with expanding symbols. It has an interesting take on the classic “Book of” free spins, with Expanding Symbols that cover full reels. It works, no doubt, but we left the game expecting more. Play the slot with dummy credits before you deposit.
We had high hopes for Gonzo’s Gold. After all, it’s the sequel to one of the best slots of all time, Gonzo’s Quest. The slot didn’t wow us entirely. The biggest omission for us is that there are no Multipliers or Avalanches.
Even if NetEnt offered a multiplier of 10x it would have catapulted the payout potential to 50,000x instead of 5,000x. More bonus rounds and bigger payout potential would have been fitting for a big-name brand slot. The Free Spins feature has Expanding Symbols for the big wins. That’s the one consolation.
As the sequel to Gonzo’s Quest, Gonzo’s Gold brings little else to the table. The original Gonzo’s Quest is way better and it still sparks joy.
NetEnt does deliver with Starburst XXXTreme for a max jackpot of 200,000x. The original Starburst pales in comparison. How NetEnt dropped the ball with its release of Gonzo’s Gold is beyond us.
