Where to play?
Crazy Birds is not your run-of-the-mill Novomatic slots which is refreshing to say the least. It features 40 paylines, 5 reels, a host of bonus rounds and a non-progressive jackpot of 500 coins. It can be played for free or from 20 pence up to a maximum £40 per spin on mobile devices (Androids, iOS, tablets) and PC desktops.
During the main game it sports 3 bonus features replete with symbol smashes (Rocky), extra wilds (Potty) and a bonus wheel (Loopy) that can be triggered randomly. There’s a free spins bonus mode where an unlimited amount of free spins can be won plus a Pool Party feature where 3 prizes are collected when you pick one of the 3 birds.
Set against the backdrop of a tropical island the theme of the game is about 3 birds courting Candy (pink parrot). The game art of the slots is a colourful affair further imbued with an Aztec motive. Symbols on the reels are bird eggs, masks, stacked gold coins, cards from 10 to Ace, wild (Candy) Crazy Birds scatters (Free Spins and Pool Party logos) and relics. The most valuable symbols are the Aztec mask and Stacked Gold coins, 5 of them at the maximum wager pays 2.50 coins or 12.5x your stake.
Crazy Birds is a medium variance slots with a RTP (average return to player percentage) of 96.2%.
We played the game with a bankroll of £100 at an average bet of £0.40 per spin. It took us a while before we warmed to the slots, it’s not often you get a medium variance game that plays like a high variance game. There’s lot of action during the main game thanks to the Loopy, Rocky, Potty and Pool Party features.
The wild symbol is Candy, it completes a winning combination when it substitutes symbols adjacent to it bar the scatters.
After a few spins you’ll notice that Candy ‘beckons’ one of the 3 birds (suitors) to the reels. Each bird brings its own distinct bonus feature to the table. When Potty appears he tosses up bunch of wilds onto the reels followed by a re-spin. Of the three bonus rounds during the main game this one is our favourite.
When Rocky appears he wears boxing gloves in typical ‘Balboa’ style. He smashes the reels, the reels cascade with the bottom reels being replaced by the top ones. The feature comes to end when no more winning spins occur.
During the base game the Loopy feature is triggered if you had a non-winning spin. A prize wheel pops up which offers cash prizes plus it gives you a shot at triggering the Free Spins or Pool Party features.
(Pool Party Bonus) Potty, Rocky and Loopy
When the Pool Party scatters pitch on reels 1 and 2 the Pool Party feature is played. A new screen opens up showcasing Potty, Rocky and Loopy – pick one bird. Once you picked a bird it travels down a shoot into the pool collecting prizes with multipliers of different sizes. The biggest payout we scored here was 50x our stake when we picked Potty. Keep in mind another bird can fall down the shoot for an even bigger cash prize.
When the Free Spins scatter pops up on reels 4 and 5 the free spins feature is initiated, you’ll receive 5 free spins. The feature can be re-triggered again should the free spins scatter appear on reels 4 and 5, 5 extra free fins will be awarded. When the Candy wild appears during a free spin more wilds will be added to the reels for the bigger wins.
We gave up trying to trigger the free spins after 200 spins (£0.40×200=£80). The upside to this is the base game bonus modes are triggered relatively easily which gives you enough cash in pocket to trigger the free spins on condition you keep trying.
Crazy Birds is a fun slots but it takes a few spins before the game really takes off. The top payout that can be won on a single spin is 500x your stake. It’s really difficult to trigger the free spins feature luckily the bonus features that apply during the main game makes the slots fun and lucrative to play. There’s no doubt in our minds that if you manage to trigger the free spins the payouts will be good. It’s nice to see that Novomatic steered away from the beaten track with Crazy Birds.
