Where to play?

The online blackjack casino software powered by RTG or RealTime Gaming online casinos is easy to access; it offers patrons lucrative match bonuses and the games can be played in the download or instant play (browser-based).

A distinguishing feature about the RTG software is that the casino manager can adjust the rules as he or she deems fit. A good example of the aforementioned is video poker since the paytables are configurable too.

To be honest I don’t know if this is a good thing or not, I guess it all boils down to how reputable and transparent the site is. In blackjack the number of decks can be configured as well.

Download Compared To Instant Play (Flash)

You can access any RTG online casinos’ software by downloading it onto your computer or you can play the games in your browser. With the advent of HTML5 the casino’s software can now be accessed via an app which the user CAN.

Once the app is downloaded the player can start playing but the Flash version’s game library is not as extensive as Desktop’s and the visuals aren’t as sharp but satisfactory nonetheless. Table limits in blackjack range from $1 and $250.

Players who want to keep tabs on the amount of hands and bets they’ve played can click on the ‘History’ button to the left of their screen.

Aside from normal blackjack, RealTime Gaming offers Perfect Pairs, Pontoon, Faceup 21 and European Blackjack. The standard blackjack game rules apply for Perfect Pairs, Suit ‘Em Up and Match Play, side bets are allowed too. The majority of the RTG casinos prefer 6 decks:

  • The dealer hits on a soft seventeen.
  • After a split doubles.
  • On any 2 cards double.
  • Split twice (up to three hands), splitting aces is against the rules.
  • If the dealer has blackjack the player losses the original bet.
  • Bodog Casino permits a configurable option for surrender but most casinos don’t.

One thing I don’t like about the RTG software is that it does not show how many decks it uses in Blackjack, many table game players I spoke to firmly believe that 6 decks are used. If you’re a European blackjack take not of the following:

  • We think the amount of decks used is 8 but it’s still a calculated guess at best.
  • When the dealer hits blackjack, the player losses (doubles and splits too). A hole card is not taken by the dealer.
  • On a hard 9 to 11 players can double.
  • You can double after a split.
  • Aces may only be split once and up to 3 hands can be split.
  • There’s no surrender.

European Blackjack

In this version of the game the dealer is not dealt a second card until the players played their cards. It’s played with 6 decks of cards and surrender is not available but players can double down if their hand totals a 9 or 11.

Matchplay 21

When you play this variation of the game keep in mind that the tens are removed from the deck. It’s played with eight decks of cards shuffled after each hand. Since the tens are removed it’s believed that it favors the dealer and not the player. However, in order to counter the disadvantage players receive special payouts.

A few options from the original version have been tinkered with here and there. For instance the player can double down on any number of cards only once. They can surrender but only once they have doubled down, the bet of the double down portion is forfeited though.

Pontoon

Pontoon is another popular variant of blackjack. Even though it’s blackjack it differs from the original game and it has its own distinct characteristics:

The dealers cards (2) are dealt face down which makes it a bit difficult for the players. But, once a Pontoon (21) is hit the player receives a larger payout which compensates for this. A players hits Pontoon when his or her hand is made up of an Ace or a ten. Another important blackjack hand is the ‘5 card trick’, it’s when you have five cards without going bust.

Super 21

This blackjack variation is played with a deck of 8 cards. The rule variations differs slightly, even money is paid except when the player’s hand contains diamonds. If need be the player can double down and the last surrender rule can be used and the double down rescue. What sets Super 21 appart from the other blackjack variations is that if your hand has 6 cards or more you bust even if the players hits 21.

Perfect Pairs Blackjack

It’s pretty much the same as standard blackjack. The difference here is the player is given the opportunity to place a bet known as ”perfect pairs” to boost his odds.

If you want to play perfect pairs you must place your bets before the cards are dealt. In the event of a pair the player is paid a bonus. The perfect pairs side bet is not influenced by the dealer’s hand.

Faceup 21

This variant is pretty similar to original blackjack and it’s played with 8 decks. The cards are dealt face up even the dealer’s hole cards. This variant favors players because of the cash prizes involved when they hit blackjack. Except for blackjack the dealer wins all ties. Players can only double down for one hand if the cards are 9, 10 or 11.
